How to Apply for Salvation

Psalm 34

King David sympathetically and appealingly spells out the terms and conditions of salvation. Speaking from his own experience, he shows what we must believe, what our attitude should be, and how we ought to ask for new life from God. He also describes God’s response.

‘O taste and see that the Lord is good, blessed is the man that trusteth in him.’

And our subject is very simply ‘how to apply for salvation.’ And what I propose to do is to go through this psalm because it is quite remarkable in unfolding the terms of salvation and how we must approach God and apply for it. But although I’m going to verse 1 in a moment, we introduce it with this eighth verse, ‘O taste and see that the Lord is good.’

Taste is used by King David clearly figuratively for perceiving and appreciating how good the Lord is by taking his salvation and experiencing him. So I begin on this note. Salvation. It is so vital to know God, to know that you’re forgiven, to know that you have destiny in heaven, to walk with him, to have your spirit brought to life. This is the most vital thing imaginable for all of us. Now David had had a tremendous escape. He had done an extremely unwise thing when he was pursued by Saul. This was before the death of Saul and before David became king. When he was pursued by him and Saul intended to take his life, at one stage David did a foolish thing and he went for refuge to, of all people, the king of a city called Gath, one of the five main Philistine cities. Well I won’t go into the detail but it was a foolish thing to do. It was a bad move and his life was at risk and he was to regret it but he was delivered.

Now he doesn’t celebrate in this psalm his unwise move in ever going to this place but he did celebrate God’s kindness and mercy in delivering him from certain death and he goes further. He deliberately, intentionally makes this psalm not merely a thanksgiving for his own deliverance but a kind of textbook or blueprint for how we get deliverance from sin and deliverance from being cut off from God.
